Research Focus

The focus of this project is to evaluate Soybean Cyst Nematode (SCN) resistant varieties and poultry manure on SCN.

Objectives

  • Investigate the effects of poultry manure on H. glycines, and beneficial nematodes abundance in fields when applied to corn and wheat rotations.
  • Compare the reproduction of SCN on commercially available SCN resistant and susceptible varieties.

Results

  1. The impacts on SCN numbers of two sources of resistance (PI 88788 and Peking) with and without ILevo (Fluopyram) seed treatment have been compared. Each treatment has been replicated six times. Soil samples have been taken early in the season, at the midseason and at harvest. Root samples were taken in August. SCN numbers are low and males are dominant, signifying a stressful condition.
  2. The field of corn has been treated with and without chicken manure, soil samples have been obtained before treatment, at midseason and at the end of the season in order to evaluate the effect on SCN and beneficials nematodes.
  3. Trial with a new compound from the company QuadSil is ongoing. A stock solution of Octadecylaminodimethyltrimethoxy-silylpropyl Ammonium Chloride, (OSAC) provided by QuadSil Inc, & Raven Analytical Lab, was evaluated as a nematicide against the sugarbeet cyst nematode (BCN), Heterodera schachtii.  Results will be obtained and a final report submitted when it is completed.

Importance

This project will establish the most effective way of rotating sources of resistance against Soybean Cyst Nematode (SCN).
