Research Focus

The focus of this project is to link P soil algal-bioavailable P to erosion, edge-of-field runoff suspended sediment and runoff particulate bound P as determined by On-Field Ohio!

Objectives

  • Measure Phosphorus (P) bioavailability (NaOH and CBD extractableP) in field soils vulnerable to erosion.
  • Evaluate the relationship between bioavailable P and soil P measures (e.g. soil total P content, Mehlich3, and oxalate extractable P)
  • Estimate the bioavailability of runoff particulate P across Ohio, using these relationships (Objective 2) in conjunction with On-Field Ohio! P Index simulations and the soil test P survey data from Ohio soil test laboratories.

Results

  1. All analyses except water extractable are complete. Water extractable P is underway.
  2. Water extractions are complete. Data is summarized Relationships needed for reporting and development of educational materials and simulations are underway.

Importance

This information will be vital for farmers to prioritize time and resources to make effective management decisions.
